Book Launch: Celebrating the works of Master, Sathe & Bhuta

On 5th September 2024, Pune witnessed the launch of the much-anticipated book The Emergence of an Indigenous Practice in India: Selected Works of Master, Sathe & Bhuta. The event brought together notable figures from the architectural community to commemorate the works of one of India's most influential firms of the 1930s and 40s, Master, Sathe and Bhuta, established in 1932.

The celebration was graced by Ar. Shrikant Sathe, son of the renowned Ar. Laxman Sathe, and Ar. Uday Sathe, grandson of Ar. Chimanlal Master. Their presence highlighted the rich legacy that continues to inspire new generations of architects.

The firm’s work, deeply rooted in the Swadeshi ethos, reflected the spirit of India on the brink of independence from British rule. With projects embodying an emerging Indian identity, Master, Sathe, and Bhuta played a pivotal role in defining architectural practice during a critical time in India’s history.

Mr. Ramprasad Akkisetti, Managing Director of CCBA Designs, delivered an insightful talk during the event, emphasizing the need to recognize and celebrate these forgotten pioneers of Indian architecture. He noted that while many global architects have left their mark on history, India’s own architectural heroes, like those from Master, Sathe & Bhuta, have often been overlooked. Their contributions remain understated, yet they laid the foundations for a uniquely Indian architectural practice.

The book launch was more than a literary event—it was a celebration of a legacy, honoring architects who shaped India’s architectural identity at a critical juncture in its history. Mr. Akkisetti stressed the importance of rediscovering these figures, whose innovative ideas and dedication to India’s identity continue to resonate today. Exploring their legacy can inspire future architects to embrace a deeper understanding of India’s architectural past and contribute to its evolving future.
